The ‘British Horse Society’ (BHS)

The ‘British Horse Society’ (BHS) system of approving equestrian establishments has two main objectives.

The first is to lay down standards for riding establishments. The BHS Approved Riding Schools programme aims to raise standards of instruction in riding establishments. To ensure that clients are well served to qualify for BHS approval; yards must meet the highest standards of instruction; safety and horse care; as appropriate.
The second objective is to support riding schools and livery yards, advising on good practice and keeping them up to date with new legislation. The programme now includes more than 950 establishments across the UK; Ireland; Belgium; Czech Republic; Hong Kong; Spain; Italy; Dubai; Malaysia and the USA. All BHS Approved Riding Schools, Where To Train Centres and Livery Yards are listed on the ‘British Horse Society’ (BHS) website: www.bhs.org.uk.

The British Horse Society (BHS) also represents the industry to government, lobbying for a fair deal on such matters as rates and planning guidance. Annual conferences for proprietors of all BHS Approved Establishments, are organised where current topics are explored and discussed.

Provides details of BHS Approved establishments in your area
Maintains comprehensive lists of all BHS Approved livery yards and riding/training establishments in the UK and abroad
Offers advice on how to set up an Approved riding establishment (send SAE for pack)

Licensing - help and liaison with licensing authorities

Publicity - details of all approved establishments are listed in this Yearbook, on the BHS
Progressive Riding Tests - the Progressive Riding Test Scheme is only available at BHS Approved Riding Schools
A Proprietor from each BHS Approved Establishment will automatically be made a BHS Silver Member
